Happy spring semester!Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting yesterday.

After much discussion, we have decided to cut down the number of strictly business meetings and up the number of regular activities/events.

So, every two weeks, instead of having a meeting, we'll get together for a social night watching movies, cooking/baking, playing games, having a Certamen competition, etc. Well announce the activity of the week ahead of time, but welcome your suggestions! Our first social night will be classics-related board gamesBananagrams, Risk, etc.!

Also, we will be instituting a weekly Rome viewing session. Never seen this acclaimed HBO series? Have all the words memorized? Either way, we hope that you'll enjoy the show!

The Constitution of

The Classics Society

Adopted 10/18/2011

1. Purpose

The purpose of the Classics Society is to provide a place for undergraduates of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who have an interest in the classical world, to connect for social networking in the world of classical scholarship and to expand their own and others’ horizons.

2. Membership

Active members must be present for at least two meetings or events per semester. If a conflict occurs, one may talk to a Consul for an exception to this rule. No dues are needed for membership.

Only active members may participate in votes and elections. A physical presence is not required to participate in votes or elections, but absentee votes must be received by the date and time specified by the Consul Primus or Co-Consuls. Voting membership is restricted to undergraduate and special students. Otherwise-eligible graduating seniors and special students may not participate in final elections.

In the event that a vote is called before two meetings or events have occurred, active membership will be defined as those undergraduate and special students who are present at the vote. Study abroad students retain their membership status during their time away from campus.

3. Seniority

It may occasionally be necessary for one or more members to be ruled senior to other members of equal standing (i.e. between regular members or between the Co-Consuls). Seniority for members of equal standing will be determined according to the following hierarchy of characteristics: number of semesters as an active member of Classics Society, number of semesters as a student at UW-Madison, number of semesters as an undergraduate student, number of semesters as a declared major or certificate student in the Classics Department, and physical age.

4. Offices and Duties

a. Consuls

i. Each year, the two leading officers of Classics Society will either be a Consul Primus and his/her subordinate, a Consul Secundus, or two Co-Consuls. Although the Co-Consuls have equal authority, for procedural purposes, the more senior officer will have higher standing. Whether there will be Consuls Primus and Secundus or Co-Consuls will be determined according to the rules stipulated in Section 5. Both Consuls will be contact person for any banking accounts.

ii. The Consul Primus presides over meetings and is in primary contact with the Faculty Advisor. The Consul Primus will call votes, but will not vote except in case of a tie. The Consul Primus will also coordinate agendas for meetings and monitor the finances of the Society. The Consul Primus is responsible for re-registering Classics Society with the Center for Leadership and Involvement every year.

iii. The Consul Secundus will preside over meetings in absence of the Consul Primus, but may not vote when doing so. The Consul Secundus will maintain membership and attendance for the Society and keep minutes of the meetings.

iv. The Co-Consuls collectively perform all of the duties listed above. Neither Consul may vote, but the more senior Consul will call the vote and will break any ties.

b. Treasurer

i. This officer is the primary contact with any affiliated banking institutions, maintains financial records for the school year, and makes them available at each meeting. The Treasurer is in charge of processing approved financial transactions and reporting these transactions at meetings. He/she also controls the financial aspects of any sale sponsored by Classics Society.

c. Historian

i. This officer is primarily responsible for any communication with Classics Society members and the public that occurs over the Internet, including the blog, Facebook, and the official webpage provided by the Center for Leadership and Involvement, especially any communication concerning meeting minutes and upcoming events.

d. Faculty Advisor

i. The Faculty Advisor is chosen by the Classics Department to oversee and guide the activities of the Classics Society, especially its student officers. He/she may be listed as a contact person for any banking accounts.

5. Rules for Elections

a. Officers will be self-nominated at the second to last meeting of the school year. Elections will then take place the last meeting of the year. Those nominated must be eligible to vote in the election. One can run for more than one office, but upon election may only assume one position. A physical presence is not required to be nominated or elected, but a statement of candidacy must be submitted by the time specified by the Consul Primus or Co-Consuls. Students may not study abroad while in office.

b. If more than two people run for the same office, a primary election will be held at the second to last meeting of the year. The primary election will also determine if the election will be for Consuls Primus and Secundus or for Co-Consuls. If the election will be for Co-Consuls, there may be up to three candidates in the final election, all others being eliminated in the primary election. Graduating seniors and special students may vote in the primary election, but not in the final election.

c. At least five eligible voters must be present at the primary and final elections. Voting is to go in the following order: Consuls (either Primus and Secundus or the Co-Consuls together), Treasurer, and lastly Historian.

d. In the event of a tie, the candidate with the greater seniority will assume the contested position. If there are only two candidates total for Consuls Primus and Secundus and a tie ensues, the two candidates will automatically become Co-Consuls.

e. In the event of a resignation of any officer other than Historian, the person in the office directly below that position will have the opportunity to assume the vacant position. If not, another election will be held to fill it.

6. Impeachment

In the event in which a member wants to call for the resignation of an officer, that person will meet with the Faculty Advisor and call to attention their grievances. The Faculty Advisor will decide if there is a valid reason for the call of resignation and, if so, will inform the officer in question of the situation. At the next meeting the Faculty Advisor will call for a vote of resignation. That officer in question will have a chance to defend him or herself and then there will be a vote. A two-thirds majority of all eligible voters is needed to remove the officer from office. The procedures in case of resignation as outlined in Section 5e will then be followed.

7. Voting

Voting is to be called at official meetings by the highest-ranking Consul. All monetary items over $30 must be voted on by the Society at an official meeting and be passed by a simple majority. The monetary item must be announced one week before the meeting and all eligible voters present at the meeting may vote. Anything under $30 does not need a week’s notice, and does not need to be called for a vote. Everyone may only vote once. Officers will vote in accordance with Section 5.

8. Meetings

Meetings are to be called to order by the highest-ranking Consul or other officer present. All meeting times should be approved by the Faculty Advisor and all officers before the first meeting of the semester and then voted on by the Society. While more are encouraged, at least four meetings and two events open to campus must be held every semester.

9. Amendments

A vote must be called two weeks in advance, with the amendment(s) having been stated. The highest-ranking Consul calls a vote and the amendment must pass with a two-thirds majority of those present at the meeting.

The new version of the constitution passed with 100% approval! It takes effect immediately, which doesnt change much, except that Irene and I are officially co-consuls, instead of co-presidents. Thanks to everyone who sent in their e-mail votes.

o We are still looking for T-shirt ideas! No artistic skill required. Requirements: Be creative! Be classical! Dont restrict yourself to red and white!

o Please send in your ideas to Irene or Crescentia or bring them to our next meeting on 11/1.

· Chazen Tour

o Classics Society will be taking a tour of the Chazen Museum of Art later this semester. Check your inboxes for a date/time poll from Irene!

· Majors Fair

o CCAS is hosting its annual Majors Fair on Wednesday, October 26 from 3:00-5:30 in Union South. This is a great opportunity to talk to advisors and student representatives of most of the majors on campus.

o Want to help out? Come by the Classics table in Varsity Hall at any time and help promote our awesome majors!

· Saturnalia

o Irene has finished the first draft of the script for our Saturnalia play! Its be a comedy parodying the department and some great works of literature, both classical and modern.

o What we need now are editors! If you would like to be involved, email Irene at iesmail@wisc.edu to get a copy of the script.

· New Constitution

o Crescentia has proposed a revision of the constitution to accommodate some of the unofficial changes weve made over the years. There will be a separate email about the constitution.

· Classics Colloquium

o The Classics Graduate Forum is hosting a colloquium this weekend called Lets Get Physical: Sex and the Body in Antiquity. This will be an excellent opportunity to see the kind of work that classics graduates do, as well as to meet graduate students and professors!

o Maud Gleason will present the keynote lecture on Friday, 10/7, from 5-6pm in 114 Van Hise. Her lecture is called Privilege Without Security? The Perils of Male Physiology.

o There will also be paper presentations from 10am-2pm in 2104 Chamberlin on Saturday, 10/8.

· Mediterranean Symposium Potluck

o Come enjoy good food and company with Classics Society on Saturday, October 21^st. We will be combining the potluck with a pumpkin carving contest. Check your inboxes for an invite!

· T-shirts

o Its time again for the annual Classics Society T-shirt! We are looking for submissions from any and all Classics Society members. No artistic skill required. Requirements: Be creative! Be classical! Dont restrict yourself to red and white!

CS will be hanging out at Picnic Point this Saturday 10/1 from 11a-1p. Come explore one of the most beautiful places on campus for a few hours before heading off to tailgate/study/whatever!

The Nebraska game isn't until 7:00, so you'll have plenty of time to prep for that!

Classics Society Meeting Minutes, 9/20

First Official Meeting and Movie Night

Thanks to everyone who showed up! It was great seeing some familiar faces, as well as all the newcomers! For those of you who couldnt make it, we talked about some upcoming events and then watched Disneys Hercules. Ive summarized our meeting below:

Our regular meeting time for this semester will be 6:30pm every other Tuesday. So, our next meeting will be October 4^th, location TBA (but probably in Memorial Union).
We will have bi-weekly study nights from 6-9pm every Sunday and Monday in both Steenbock Library and Memorial Library. Steenbock is by the Lakeshore dorms on the Route 80 busline (get off at Observatory and Babcock).
1. 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, and 10/166-9p in Steenbock 102
2. 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, and 10/176-9p in Memorial M279a
3. Well schedule additional meetings depending on how these locations and times work out!
We will also be having monthly movie/game nights. Our next fun night will probably be the week of October 3 or 10. Time TBD at next meeting, but check your calendars for availability. Also, let us know of any movies youd like to watch or games youd like to play!
Our first Mediterranean Symposium Potluck is tentatively scheduled for October 23^rd. Well do a sign-up for food and supplies after the next meeting.
We will have a short Toga Wrapping 101 session before the symposium. Details TBA.
Well be hanging out at Picnic Point from about 11-1 on Saturday, October 1^st. Once weve reserved a fire pit, well send out more details. Let us know if youre interested or have any dietary restrictions!
Every spring, we invite a professor from another university to lecture and meet with the undergraduates. If you know of anyone (your friends favorite professor, someone whose work youve read, etc.), let us know soon!
Finally, we will be performing for Saturnalia, the Classics Departments annual holiday party. Anyone who wants to help out with the script should contact Irene!

Salvete omnes!

I hope that everyone had a great summer and is settling into the new semester! We had a great response from the Student Organization Fair and are excited to welcome 60 new members to the Classics Society mailing list! Now that we are firmly into September, we'd like to get started with Classics Society events. Our first meeting of the semester is Tuesday, 9/20, 7:00pm-? in Vilas 4028.

We are planning lots of events for this year: movie nights, game nights (Latin Bananagrams, anyone?), weekly study nights, as well as planning some of our bigger events, like T-shirt sales, trips to the art museum, and, of course, Saturnalia.

After the meeting, we'll be watching a movie! Choices will include Troy, 300, Hercules, and Gladiator!

Initial Officers’ Meeting

Our first meeting will coincide with our first monthly movie night will be on 9/20 7p-10p, hopefully in Vilas Hall (Crescentia will schedule). Movies for consideration include The Eagle, Troy, 300, and Clash of the Titans. Voting will occur at the meeting.

We’re leaning towards Tuesday meetings.

Advertising:

Irene and others will make posters advertising Classics Society and the meeting/movie night. We need to get permission to post the fliers.
We will generate a list of all Latin 101 and Classical Humanities courses this semester and attempt to advertise Classics Society to each class. We should get permission from the TA/professor before advertising. The goal is to talk to all the classes before the 9/20 meeting. We should collect names and email addresses from interested students when we advertise (perhaps pass around a sheet of paper) and write the blog address on the board: http://uwclassicssociety.blogspot.com/.

We can sell our extra T-shirts at the first meeting

Tonight's was the last Classics Society meeting of the semester. Here's what was covered:

I. Shirts: The order is in, and we ought to have them before break. Shirt pick-up details will be determined.

II. Next semester's events: Musical performance by Joe, the Odyssey singer. The lecture by U-Chicago's Professor Rudall may be rescheduled due to a conflict with a Classics Conference.

There is also potential for a second lecture by Prof. Vincent Tomasso, about the "300" story-- this could be a short lecture and movie night event.

Other ideas for the spring include ice skating at the Shell, game nights, movie outing to see "The Eagle," etc.

III. Thanks again to everyone who participated in Saturnalia; it was a great event!

Dear Classics Society,
Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving! Apologies that this email is a bit late.

I. CS Shirts: Everyone who would like a t-shirt should have their order and money to Ashley by December 2nd. $10 for a t-shirt, $12 long-sleeve. They make great Christmas presents! Checks should be written out to: Classics Society.

II. Saturnalia is this coming Thursday at 4 PM, in Van Hise- the room is TBD, but will either be entirely in 1418, or the play will be in 114/104 with the reception in the Pillinger Library on the 9th floor.
Email Katie or me if you would like to bring a side dish/dessert. Sandwiches will be provided by the department.
ATTENTION: Everyone who is participating in the Harry Potter play-- come to the rehearsal at 5PM on Monday the 29th, meet on the 4th floor of Van Hise in the general hall-way area. We'll find an empty classroom from there to practice in. The Latin script is complete; a very big thanks goes to Crescentia.

Today's meeting was quote productive! Here's the news:

I. Our spring semester events:
Joe Goodkin, the Odyssey Singer will be performing on campus on Thursday February 17th at 5:00 PM. We will either be in the Chazen museum, or in Van Hise. Afterwards we'll be taking him out to dinner.
Professor Rudall will be guest-lecturing on April 7th at 5:00 PM in Van Hise. An application will submitted to the Lectures Committee for funding. We will also take him out to dinner.

II. T-shirts are now available to order! You should have received an email from Ashley with the design and order form. T-shirts are $10, long sleeve shirts are $12. When ordering, pay with cash or check (made out to Classics Society), and give directly to Ashley or deposit in the Classics Society mailbox, on the 9th floor of Van Hise, box 912. Place your order, we ought to get them in December. (They make great Christmas presents!)

III. Saturnalia:
Saturnalia, the Classics Department winter party, will be on Thursday, December 2nd from 4:00-6:00 PM, in Van Hise (particular room TBA). Regarding food, we'll have catering for the main dish, and besides that members will be contributing drinks, side dishes, desserts. Let me know what you would like to bring, as to prevent dish- duplication.
To provide some entertainment before eating and mingling, it was decided today that we will be putting on a perfomance: Harrius Potter (abridged). Yes, we will have dialogue in Latin. Crescentia is writing up a script by this weekend, running 10-15 minutes.
It won't be a big commitment; we'll just have a few run-throughs after the meetings until Saturnalia. We'll have our scripts onstage (unless you'd like to memorize), have minimalist home-made costumes. Everyone at the meeting was very excited about it; it ought to be fun and funny.
As for casting, we have Irene as Harry Potter, Katie as Ron, myself as Quirrel/Voldemort, Maura as McGonagall. Forgive me if I forgot other roles claimed at the meeting, just email me-- and anyone else who would like to be involved, contact me and with which role you would like to play! We have quite the roster to fill.

Meeting Minutes 10/26/10

Evening Classicists!

This evening we covered the following (and enjoyed a viewing of "Troy"):

I. We'll have t-shirt order forms ready by the next meeting-- we've decided on red shirts with white text, "Wisconsin Classics" on the front with the university seal on the back. Both short- and long-sleeve shirts will be ordered, at $10 and $12 respectively.

II. Joe the Odyssey Singer will perform on either the 17th or 24th of February next semester, pending on other Classics department events.
We've gotten word back from Professor Rudall from U-Chicago, and he would be glad to come and give a lecture; the subject will likely be on poetry and/or drama. We're looking at late March or early April for this event.

III. Our next meeting, Tuesday Novemebr 9th, will be postponed a half an hour due to the Certificate Showcase, which is taking place in Chadbourne Hall, from 5:30 to 6:30.

IV. Our next (unofficial) event is symposium at my house: 307 E Gorham, on November 5th at 8:00. You can take the 81 or other buses from campus to get there. Come enjoy an evening with fellow Classicists. Wear your toga.

Meeting Minutes 10/12/10

Buona notte,

Today's meeting was pretty brief, not too many updates since last week. Here's what we covered:

I. T-shirts. Crescentia and Ashley are talking to Isaac the T-shirt guy about long and short sleeve shirts, costs, etc. We also considered adding "Wisconsin Classics" coffee mugs to our sales items.

II. Potential lecturers: A professor we were in contact with is unable to make a commitment due to Visa problems. We haven't gotten word back from the U-Chicago professor, so we ought to think of other possibilities. So if any member has any ideas for a potential speaker, let us know!

III. Events: Out next meeting is Tuesday October 26th, and following that is the movie night! Those who attend will vote on the film watched. Potential titles: 300, Jason & the Argonauts, Troy, etc. Bring along any movies you want to add to the ballot.
Friday November 5th is Symposium at my house, more information on that to come.
Saturnalia is Thursday, December 2nd. Aside from good food and good company, we'd like to come up with something to add to the event. Previous years have featured a play (performed in Latin), slide shows of Classics-related trips. If you have an idea, share it, either at the meetings or via email.

Hello Classics Society Members!

Today was our second meeting, and events and such are coming together nicely. Here's what we covered:

I. T-shirts: A design was brought forward ("Wisconsin Classics" on the front, UW seal on the back, white print, red shirt), and the consensus was positive. Ashley & Crescentia are leading the effort to look into ordering through Underground. Interest has been expressed for both short-sleeves and long sleeves.

II. Selling Pizzas: We're thinking of saving this for spring semester, since t-shirt is our main fundraising effort as of now. But if anyone wants to make it happen this semester, and is able to plan it, email Katie or I.

III. Volunteers for Majors Fair: On Tuesday the 19th from 3-5:30, the Majors Fair is taking place in Memorial Union. We've already got a good roster for persons to promote the Classics department, but if anyone who wasn't at the meeting is enthusiastic about this opportunity, send an email to Katie or I. You can be present at the fair for as long as your schedule allows. Having a good crowd for Classics is great promotion!

IV. Events:
i. October 26th, after the 6:00 meeting: Movie night! On the ballot for viewing: 300, Jason & the Argonauts, Life of Brian, History of the World Part One, Troy, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Come to the next meeting with more suggestions!
ii. Symposium: Evening of Friday, November 5th at my house. If this conflicts with the majority of members, let me know and it can be rescheduled.
iii. Joe the Odyssey singer has contacted us and is willing to come perform on campus for free. This semester seems to be booking up fast between other events and exams, and we would love it for faculty and graduate students to be in attendance as well-- so we're thinking this to be a spring semester event.
iv. Saturnalia, our department-wide winter party shall be sometime in December. Specific date will be determined soon.

Our next meeting is next week (since this meeting was bumped from last week due to Obama) Tuesday, October 12th at 6:00 PM. Hope to see you there!

Tonight was our first meeting- a small but promising group; we hope to see more of you in the coming weeks!
This email summarizes the issues we discussed:

I. The time for subsequent meetings has been changed from 5:30 to 6:00 PM.

II. Homecoming was discussed, in regards to participating. Of those assembled, none could devote the time towards the effort of organizing a homecoming committee. If anyone is interested in taking this up, please let us know.

III. Fundraising activities: We're looking to in the near future sell pizza (more info on that at a later date), and t-shirts. This year's shirt design will take a traditional simple turn with just the text "WISCONSIN CLASSICS." They will be ordered fairly soon. We do have a number of old t-shirts for sale, including those of the toga design, and of Bucky in front of the Coliseum, if anyone is interested in purchasing one ($12).

IV. Facebook: Classics Society has a group on facebook, so if you're a member, look us up and join in order to receive messages and event invitations.

V. We'd like to organize future lectures to present to the university. Currently there are two speakers whom will be approached, an archaeologist whose work is in Ostia Antica, and a U-Chicago Classics professor. One would certainly be in the spring semester, we'll see if one for later this fall can be set up.

VI. Upcoming events:
i. Our first group event will be an afternoon in James Madison Park starting at 2:00 PM, playing kickball. Attendees may meet at my house (307 E Gorham, right across from the Gates of Heaven synagogue at the west corner of the park).
ii. Check out the Classics Department website for more events to mark on your calendar, including lectures in the Pillinger series (there's one this Friday), those presented by the Classics Department, and the Archaeological Institute for America, as well at the upcoming Graduate School Colloquium. They are all very interesting and fun to attend, so do if you can!
iii. The Study Abroad Fair is tomorrow from 4-7 in Memorial Union. I'll be sitting at the table for the Classics Summer program in Italy, which I attended this last May-June (best experience of my life, no exaggeration). Stop in and check out all the amazing programs!

VII. For the next meeting, in two weeks' time, bring your calendars so we may plan more events, including but not limited to: movie nights, game nights, symposia, study dates. We hope to have a higher tally of members present at meetings- if you are able, please come, your input is valued!

CHICAGO ART INSTITUTE
~We are planning the trip for either Saturday March 20th or April 10th. Check your calendars and look out for an e-mail about voting on a day. It would be great if a lot of people can come- so be sure to vote on the day that works best for you. More information will follow, but the trip will probably cost around $20-$25 (including the van and the entrance fee and hopefully a tour)!

Welcome back to a new semester and 2010!! It was really good to see everyone, as well as some new faces and I hope that those of you who couldn't make it tonight will be at the next meeting or will attend some of our upcoming events!

First off we have a NEW MEETING TIME!! From now on we will be meeting on WEDNESDAYS at 6:30 pm.

UPCOMING EVENTS to take note of:

**JCL (Junior Classical League) has their State Convention this weekend. There are a number of ways to get involved Thursday evening, and throughout the day on Friday. We plan to sell T-shirts at the union Thursday night and they may need chaperones for the dance Friday night. If you have time to volunteer either day, and did not sign up tonight, please e-mail Professor Beneker with your name and availability. More specific information on the JCL events to come!

**MOVIE NIGHT next wednesday (Feb. 3) at 7 pm in the union. The plan is to bring movies (classically related) and we will vote on which one to watch.

**There are a number of upcoming lectures in the classics department which may be of interest to you. On Jan 28th, and Feb. 2nd, 4th and 9th the four finalists for open teaching positions will be giving talks, and there are a number of other speakers coming throughout February and March. For specific information on people and times check events on the department website.

**Sunday Afternoon studying in the Greek and Latin Reading Room (4th floor Memorial Union). Come study with fellow classics society members!

Hi Guys!
I really hope that everyone had a good Halloween and that November is going well so far! Here's what was discussed tonight:

*Saturnalia will be Thursday December 10th!! The time isn't set but it will probably be in the late afternoon/ early evening.
-It is Professor Montiglio's last semester here so we talked about giving her a gift (possibly a toy pistol to "shoot" her next students) and maybe telling a favorite story about Greek class.
-ALSO we will have a slideshow to show off our travels and where we have all been! So if you have any cool pictures of yourself, friends, a professor, or a sight, e-mail them to Andrea and they will be included!

Unfortunately, we will not be participating in the Homecoming Parade this year. Due to the lack of interest and inability to meet before Friday to come up with a new idea, implement it, make costumes, etc. this decision makes sense. I think that CS would benefit from being in the parade, but not from an idea that we had to come up with on Tuesday and make happen before Friday.

Hey!!
It was really good to see everyone who came tonight, and I hope that those of you who couldn't make it are doing well!! As far as what was discussed:

*T-Shirts
-We will be printing off more of the Coliseum Bucky shirts, so they will be available if you are interested
-BUT more importantly-we are hoping to have new t-shirts by Winter Break. So- get creative!! The deadline for t-shirt designs is our next meeting- Wed. October 21st!! We will vote then on the new "look"!

*Lecturers
-Two potential speakers were discussed- hopefully one for the Fall semester and one for the Spring. But- if you have an idea of someone- feel free to bring it to the next meeting.

*For those of you interested in Archaeology it was suggested that you check out the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA)'s website at www.archaeological.org. You can get a year-long membership for only $26 and there is a lot of helpful, useful and interesting information for students.

*HOMECOMING!!
-There is the parade next Friday, October 11th. If you would be interested in participating in making a float and being in the parade- contact Melissa!! mlmillard27@gmail.com
-This will hopefully include a a SYMPOSIUM after the parade- details of where/ when to come!

*Apple/ raspberry/ pumpkin patch/ corn maze THIS SUNDAY!!
-It is a 20 mile bike ride, or a 20 minute drive. If you want to go- get in touch! A car load will leave from the Union at 10:30 am...or you can BIKE!!

*The Chicago trip has been postponed until next semester. It was too hard with the football games/ Thanksgiving/ finals...but it will happen!!

*Sunday Studying in the Greek and Latin Reading Room (4th Floor Memorial Library) Later afternoon usually beginning around 3. You can get a free key to the room from the Admin. office on the 3rd floor...or just knock!

*Kaplan FREE GRE this Saturday 9:30-noon. This is a good way to see what the test is like without spending any money!

Hey!!
It was really great to see everyone at the meeting today! There were
so many new faces, which is awesome and I hope that everyone who
couldn't make it tonight is having a good semester and will be able to
attend some of our upcoming events! Speaking of which...

SUNDAYS around 3- Study Session in the Greek and Latin Reading Room!
(It is located on the 4th floor of Memorial Library. If you get off
the elevator: take a right, and then another right. Walk down the
long hallway (walking towards Langdon) and it's on your left hand side
through the first set of doors. There will be signs, and it is locked
so you can knock, or ask a librarian to get your own key!)

As far as what was discussed at tonight's meeting:

Amanda, a representative from Kaplan came and spoke to us briefly
about the different ways that Kaplan can help Student Organizations.
Kaplan offers free practice tests for the GRE as well as the LSATs and
other graduate school entrance exams, which is a really great
opportunity. They also offer resume writing workshops, and provide
general help with applying to graduate school, so having them work
with the Classics Society should be beneficial for a lot of us!

-We went over some other events that we will be planning, including:

*Trip to the Chicago Art Institute (depending on how many people
are interested, we could take university vans, or possibly even rent a
coach. We are thinking either the first or second Saturday in
November! Half a day at the museum with a possible tour of classical
art, and then half a day shopping/ spending time in the city!)

PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me if you are interested in this trip, so
that I can figure out the transportation. It would probably only cost
$20 or $25, and would include the round-trip transportation as well as
museum entry! E-mail me and let me know how interested you are:

We are currently researching speakers to visit UW sometime this year. Expect a list of topics to be posted sometime this week, and feel free to grab a topic (or create a new one) and being researching people who are knowledgeable in that area to come speak!

We will be celebrating Saturnalia on Thursday, December 4th, from 4:30-6:30 in room 1418 Van Hise!

The Constitution of

The Classics Society

1. Purpose

The Purpose of the Classics Society is to provide a place for undergraduates of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who have an interest in the Classical World, to connect for social networking in the world of Classical scholarship and for expanding their own and others’ horizons.

2. Membership

For Membership one must be present at least two meetings per semester. If a conflict occurs, one may talk to the President for overruling of this rule. No dues are needed for membership.

3. Officers

a. Rules for Voting/Assuming Office

Officers will be self-nominated at the second to last meeting of the school year. Elections will then take place the last meeting of the year. Those nominated must have membership standing. One can run for more than one office, but upon election may only assume one position. If more than two people run for the same office, a primary election will be held at the second to last meeting of the year. Graduating seniors may vote in this primary election, but not in the final election. At least five eligible voters must be present to have a vote for officers. Voting is to go in the following order: President, Vice President, and lastly Treasurer. In the event of a resignation of any office other than Treasurer, the person in the office directly below that position will have the opportunity to assume the vacant position. If not, another election will be held to fill it.

b. Offices and Duties

i. President – This office presides over meetings and is in primary contact with the faculty advisor. The President will call votes, but not vote unless there is a tie in voting. The President will also coordinate agendas for meetings and monitor the finances of the Society

ii. Vice President – The Vice President will preside over meetings in absence of President. Has the ability of assume presidency in case of resignation of President. The Vice President will maintain membership and attendance for the Society and keep minutes of the meetings.

iii. Treasurer – This office will maintain financial records for the school year and make them available at each meeting. The Treasurer will be in charge of processing transactions after approvals and report there transactions at meetings.

c. Impeachment

In the event in which a member wants to call for resignation of an officer, that person will meet with the faculty advisor and call to attention their grievances. The faculty advisor will decide if this is a valid reason for the call of resignation. If it is, at the next meeting the faculty advisor will call for a vote of resignation. That officer in question will have a chance to defend him or herself and then there will be a vote. Two-thirds the majority is needed.

4. Voting

Voting is to be called at official meetings by the President. All monetary items over $30 must be voted on by the Society at an official meeting and be passed by a simple majority. The monetary item must be announced one week before the meeting and everyone present at the meeting (excluding the President, who will only vote in case of a tie) can cast a vote. Anything under $30 does not need a week notice, and does not need to be called for a vote. Everyone may only vote once. For Voting for Officers, please see section 3.a of the Constitution.

5. Meetings

Meetings are to be called to order by the President or highest-ranking officer present. All meeting times should be approved by the faculty advisor and all officers before the first meeting of the semester and then voted on by the Society. While more are encouraged, at least four meetings and two events open to campus must be held every semester.

6. Amendments

A vote must be called two weeks in advanced, with the amendment(s) having been stated. The President calls a vote and the amendment must pass with two-thirds the majority of those present at the meeting.
